The Best Turn-by-Turn Navigation App for iPhone

The Best Turn-by-Turn Navigation App for iPhoneThe iPhone long-suffered from no default turn-by-turn navigation app and only a few good third-party options. Then, Apple released their own version that nearly drowned in criticism. Google came to the rescue with the Google Maps, our new favorite turn-by-turn navigation app. Why? It works really well.

The Best Turn-by-Turn Navigation App for iPhone

  • Free voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation
  • Easy location search
  • Pretty much the best traffic estimates you're going to find
  • Plenty of good route choices
  • Intelligent re-routing when you make a mistake
  • Enormous database of nearby locations you can search for
  • Public transit, driving, and walking directions
  • Google Earth integration
  • Swipe ahead in your directions to see what's next

The Best Turn-by-Turn Navigation App for iPhone

While no navigation app is perfect, Google's attempt comes pretty close. You can find anything with a quick search, get several suggested routes that integrate traffic information, and listen to directions from a computer voice that actually sounds relatively human (and is easier to understand than, say, Siri). When you make a mistake, Google Maps intelligently re-routes you. You also have access to public transit and walking directions, unlike most other offerings on the iTunes App Store (which only provide a single type of directions). Ultimately, there's little to complain about and a lot to praise. Google Maps just works really well and it's the navigation app you should be using on your iPhone.

The Best Turn-by-Turn Navigation App for iPhone

Google Maps doesn't integrate with Siri and doesn't run in the background quite as elegantly as Apple Maps. Why? The usual reason: Apple doesn't give its third-party developers access to the APIs it uses to try and have an advantage over them. Basically, Google Maps falters where any app would. It's not Google's fault.

One issue that is Google's fault, however, comes in the form of traffic estimates. Often times the app will provide you with a route that claims to suffer from heavy traffic when that heavy traffic only affects a tiny, tiny portion of your trip. Because you get to take a look at the actually traffic on your route before confirming it, this isn't a big deal. It just seems silly to warn you about traffic when it will likely have no effect on the trip as a whole.

The Best Turn-by-Turn Navigation App for iPhone

Waze (Free) is our former favorite, and it's still pretty great. While the app sometimes feels a bit cluttered and some feel its directions aren't as good as other options, it does provide a remarkable feature set that you can't really get anywhere else?plus it's free. Waze offers some of the best traffic information you can find, because it's user-reported, plus you can find out about accidents and nearby cops trying to bust people for speeding. Waze can also help you find gas stations on the way to your destination and even offer exclusive discounts. It offers a lot of perks that are worth considering.

Apple Maps (Free with iOS 6) isn't as incredibly awful as the hype. It's not great, and certainly has its various problems, but if you're in the US you'll find directions to be reasonably accurate (no more or less than the other competition here) and it, naturally, integrates with iOS 6 better than anything. That said, Apple Maps is far from perfect. Heavy criticism exists for a reason. Outside of the US it's pretty terrible. The mistakes it makes everywhere are often bizarre. Traffic information is generally useless and poorly displayed. You can't jump ahead in directions if navigation is active. When you get directions, it often assumes which route you want rather than asking, and the choices aren't great in general. Complaints about Apple Maps could fill an encylopedia, so we'll give it a rest. It is improving, however, and hopefully some day in the future it'll compete head-to-head with Google.

Navigon USA ($30 + $14 for live traffic), popular GPS maker Garmin's addition to the turn-by-turn navigation app pool, was very good. It offers a live traffic option (for a price) and maps you can pre-download. The pre-downloading of maps is a little annoying at first, because it takes awhile, but it seems to allow the app to operate much faster than apps that download information on the fly (like Waze). Of every app tested, Navigon was the fastest to respond with driving directions and was consistently telling me where to go with plenty of advance notice. The automated voice was also one of the best. The problem with Navigon, however, is that it's really only better than Waze in that regard and on-par with Waze when it comes to traffic and general directions. Waze provides for free what Navigon prices at $44, so it's hard to recommend that as a better option. While none of the GPS apps make it simple enough to quickly find the location and get directions (like the built-in Maps app does), Waze was much faster. Navigon required quite a few taps to get started each time. That said, if you don't like Waze and want a paid app with pre-downloaded maps, Navigon is a good choice.

Garmin North America ($50) is also pretty good. It costs more, but the amount of time it takes to figure out to decide where you're going and start the navigation is much faster than it is with Navigon. Maps are built-in to the app download so once you have the app it is ready to go. You can purchase live traffic for $15, bringing the total app cost up to $65. It's pricey, but the user interface and experience is a step up and the rest of the app is pretty similar in quality to Navigon. It's also a good choice if you want to shell out some money, although we have a hard time recommending the cost when the free options you have are pretty solid.

Gokivo Navigator (Free) is a good free alternative. It's very simple?you just input where you want to go and it navigates you there. When I intentionally missed turns to see what it would do, it reacted pretty quickly and tried to get me on the right route. When I went in the wrong direction it had trouble keeping up with me, however, telling me to run right on every street I passed but not getting the words out in time. To be fair, however, I was trying to make it mess up. Overall Gokivo held its own and provided solid navigation. If you're not into Waze or spending any money, Gokivo is worth a look.

Navfree GPS Live USA (Free) is the only free option we tested that requires map downloads in advance. This isn't necessarily a downside, as having the data in your phone ahead of time can make loading the maps a little bit faster. What slowed things down, however, was Navfree's user interface. It feels like a GPS rather than an app. You have to tap a lot of icons and give it a lot of specific information before you can get going. Just inputting everything was unnecessarily frustrating. Navfree is also ad-supported, which is reasonable because they're giving you a free navigation app, but ads are harder to deal with on navigation apps because screen real estate is especially important. It's a serviceable free option, but definitely not the best.

MapQuest 4 Mobile (Free) was my favorite free turn-by-turn navigation app in the past, but using it again now was surprisingly disappointing. While it provided decent navigation, for the most part, as soon as I missed a turn it just completely gave up. I do remember it being slow to react when I tested it in the past, but either I didn't remember how slow it actually is or it has gotten worse. Either way, you have multiple free options that are a better choice so I'd pass on MapQuest for now.

Note: Despite our best efforts to get review copies, we were unable to test Tom Tom, AT&T Navigator, and CoPilot Live USA. It should be noted that these apps were not considered in our evaluation because we couldn't test them.

Brad Pitt joined China's Twitter alternative Sina Weibo this week, gaining thousands of followers after sending a message that raised eyebrows: "It is the truth. Yup, I'm coming."

1. McDonald's Promoted Trend Goes Wrong

Back in January, McDonald's tried to promote its brand and engage with customers through two promoted trends: #meetthefarmers and #mcdstories. Unfortunately for McDonald's, many Twitter users decided to post their horror stories at the fast food chain using the second of those hashtags. In essence, McDonald's paid to promote a trend that showered the company in bad publicity. McDonald's later admitted that "#mcdstories did not go as planned."

CA school slaying suspect found unfit for trial

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? A man accused of killing seven people at a small Northern California Christian college is not mentally fit for trial, a judge ruled before temporarily suspending criminal proceedings until the defendant is deemed competent.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Carrie Panetta on Monday put on hold the criminal case against One Goh. Two psychiatric evaluations concluded that Goh suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

Goh is charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in the April 2 attack at Oikos University in Oakland. He has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed.

Alameda County Assistant Public Defender David Klaus said after Monday's brief hearing that both doctors who examined Goh found that he suffers from hallucinations and delusions and harbors a deep mistrust of people, including those trying to help him.

"He's certainly a deeply troubled man," Klaus said. "He's locked up in shame, remorse and sadness. He's not eating, he's not taking care of himself."

Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Stacie Pettigrew declined to comment after the hearing.

Authorities have said Goh, a former Oikos student, planned the killing spree at the school that caters to Korean immigrants after becoming angry with school officials over a tuition dispute. He previously decided to drop out of the school's nursing program.

Panetta ordered Goh to return to court on Jan. 28, when Klaus said discussions will likely focus on where his client should be placed in order to regain his competency.

Eventually, Klaus said, the plan would be for Goh to go to a facility, likely Napa State Hospital, where "he is expected to be restored to competency with a combination of medication and therapy."

There was no timetable on when Goh could stand trial, Klaus said.

Relatives of some victims have suggested Goh may be faking his condition. Klaus said his client is not trying to avoid anything.

"I just want to make sure it's understood that this is a temporary suspension of proceedings in this case," Klaus said. "This is really about his present mental status and the Constitution demands he be competent and be able to understand and rationally participate in the proceedings.

"And, right now, he can't do that."

Recommended Reading: The Music Industry Doesn't Have to Kill You

"Music has an extremely unique way of impacting each one of us; but the realities of the business that surround it are far from safe, comfortable, or loving. Frankly, it can often be terrible and destructive...The music industry does not have to kill you. Nor does it have to make you generally miserable. This is not a self-help book. Nor is it a how-to guide. It is my first step in spending the rest of my life encouraging people in the music industry to think differently." - John Clore,?The Music Industry Doesn't Have To Kill You,Introduction?

The music industry isn't just known for its art and the glitz and glamour of the red carpet, it also has an infamous reputation captured in the well-known phrase (not to mention countless movies) "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll" and the similarly popular Hunter S. Thompson misquote "the music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like gods. There's also a negative side."?It may be a misquote, but there are reasons it became popular.

That can be pretty discouraging if you're pursuing a music career simply for the love of music and not based on an interest in becoming rich and famous yourself (and if that's actually the case, you might want to reconsider). The good news is it doesn't have to be that way.

The Music Industry Doesn't Have To Kill You: Conversations with Remarkable People from the Music Industry?is a compelling series of interviews with established music industry veterans written by John Clore (who is a music industry vet himself). It's filled with both knowledge of how the music industry works and insights on how to maintain your ethics and character while still building a successful career. ?But honestly, this is not just about reviewing some book and telling you to buy or even read it, because I don't just write about anything on here. I won't review a book unless I've read it myself and really believe it has something of value to offer, it's not about advertising. John was nice enough to send me a copy of his book to check out and I truly enjoyed reading it. I bookmarked or made a note of something at least once every few pages because this book has that many quote-worthy and thought provoking ideas. The book focuses on the Nashville scene and includes interviews with 23 different music industry people of varying backgrounds including everything from executives to tour managers and people like?Jim Foglesong, Brenda Lee, and Alan Parsons. Clore uses these interviews to showcase how these individuals have managed to succeed while giving back to their communities, overcoming addictions, keeping their egos in check, sticking with their morals, and generally just being a decent person. The interviews almost feel like you're in the room listening in, and you'll learn a lot from them, but my favorite parts are actually Clore's own short anecdotes between the interviews. These sections help provide some of the bigger pictures lessons (like one of my favorite sections "You Probably Aren't That Cool) and gives the book a very personal feel.

The Music Industry Doesn't Have To Kill You?is a great read for anyone who's interested in the music industry, especially students or anyone who might be feeling discouraged, and a great start for the new year.?It will help you learn about how the industry works while confronting the stereotypes you've heard and challenging you to change them.

Craftaholics Anonymous? | 21 Small Craft Storage Ideas for Kids

Happy Friday! Do you have crafty kids? Do they have just as many crafting supplies as you? Well, here are some ideas on how to organize and store all those small craft supplies.

This post is taken from?this Facebook thread?where Annie asked:

?My daughter has lots of beads, crayons and other craft stuff?but I don?t really know how to store it all in a nice but still easy for her to access way! Help!??- Annie

small craft storage

1. ?Plastic drawer storage bin. One drawer for each ?thing? or if you want it to be separated out by color, then use plastic zip bags for the different colors and put the bags in the drawers. Cheap, easy, and easy to maintain as well!? ? Wendy L.
2. ?We love tackle boxes and tool boxes for craft storage.? ? Jayme C.

3. ?They make compartmented storage options, but another fun way is small jars like baby food or the little jam jars. They make it easy to see what?s inside and to only pick out the ones you want at any given time.? ? Kelie M.
4. ?A clear, over the door shoe organizer for the bigger sized craft stuff (crayons, etc) and definitely tackle boxes for the beads.? ? Christian M.
5. ?There are Rubbermaid containers in the home improvement aisle at Wal-mart. They have lots of dividers and they are removable for what size you need. They are better than the ones you find in the craft department.? ? Colette T.
6. ?You can also use the clear containers you find in the fishing department for storage. They are WAY cheaper than that you find in the crafting area and are able to make to whatever size you need. I have also used tackle boxes to store crayons and such and they are very portable.? ? Laurie A.
7. ?Why not find a horizontal coat rack and add wire handles to glass or mason jars and hang on the hooks. You can hang it over her art station or at a level that she can reach.? ? Kendra H.
8. ?Individual plastic picture boxes meant for scrapbooking. I have seen them in different sizes and they have snap closures.? ? Erin B.

{source Homemade Simple}
9. ?Tackle boxes are a good idea. Or we use the small Crystal Light containers ? peel the covers off them, recover with scrapbook paper, put a magnet on the back and store on a cookie sheet on the wall. You could also reuse the larger Kool-aid containers or creamer or coffee containers as they are all plastic with good lids.? ? Ellen W.

10. ?We have smaller containers that fit in a 3 drawer plastic container. It?s large enough to fit it all and the drawers are big enough to fit smaller containers.? ? Roxanne S.

11. ?Maybe some Rubbermaid type drawers. They come in different sizes and she could just pull out the drawer she needs at the time. And they?re stackable! I use little fishing tackle boxes to organize my beads too. They?re cheaper than the ones in the craft department!? ? Andrea M.
12. ?I use glass mason jars. You can get a wine rack and set it up, and put the jars in the rack. Then she can see the contents and she can have easy access.? ? Ashley M.
13. ?We all use empty plastic gallon ice cream buckets. You get to eat the ice cream then reuse them. They are the perfect size and height for multiple kids to use and the lids stay on really well. They also hold a lot of crayons and other crafting supplies. When we go out to eat I always bring home the crayons the kids get at the restaurant and just add them to the bucket. Plus they can be stacked and most have handles that make them easy to carry.? ? Sue C.?

{source Fancy Frugal Life craft room}
14. ?Lots of options! Over-the-door shoe organizer (clear ones are great for little ones); small glavanized buckets on a table, shelf, or bookcase; Sterilite rolling storage with drawers and you could add utensil trays or any type of container(s) inside to separate items; or a utensil caddy. We have two and I turned them into ?official? homework stations complete with crayons, pencils, erasers, scissors, rulers, markers, glue sticks, and such. Or, you can repurpose containers for storage like cereal boxes, baby wipes containers, plastic tubs/jars/bins, etc.? ? Heather T.
15. ?I went to Lowe?s and got a rectangular storage box for screws etc. It has many small long drawers and 6 larger drawers. They are $20. You can buy small containers like for condiments at the dollar store and separate in the bigger drawers. Label with a label maker and voila! Tons of storage for beads, findings, crayons, you name it.? ? Jenny B.
16. ?My best way is jars: either mason jars or baby food jars, they work great! The wipe boxes are awesome for crayons.? ? Meg M.
17. ?Fishing box or tool boxes are great for storage of craft material, if you just get one big tool box you can put beads into ziplock bags.? ? Sandra C.
18. ?You can use a condiment rack and use every jar for different kinds of beads. For pencils, crayons, markers, etc., you can use a wine racket with plastic cups!? ? Maria R.
19. ?Divided utensil carrier for markers, crayons, chalk, etc.? ? Kelly H.
20. ?I would not use any glass jars if the child is very young instead one could use plastic mayonaise jars or other plastic jars.? ? Sharlene T.
21. ?We use old pill bottles for beads because the safety caps prevent little ones from getting into them. Crayons, paints, pencil, and crayons go into old baby wipe containers. Though I do not have babies anymore I still buy them to clean my stamps. Also boot boxes from our kids snow boots or shoe boxes recovered in scrapbook paper or old wallpaper scraps to make them more sturdy. They are great for paper and holding extra craft supplies.? ? Michelle B.

In this era of faux celebrities? like Jessica Simpson (Does anyone remember what she?s famous for?)? ?I?ve grown accustomed to the usual reality- show plot devices? fake fights with friends/family/boyfriends, fake public melt-downs, and fake relationship/engagements. ?But I draw the line when you?re involving other people (especially those under the age of 18) ? who either don?t know how hurt they could get (like those under-age Kardashians who are now ?modeling?) ? or those who are truly going to get physically hurt because some publicity or attention-getting behavior is extremely dangerous. ?I?m thinking about Lindsay Lohan here and her version of ??driving? as a contact sport.

But using the conception and birth of a child as a publicity device is just simply obscene. ?Unfortunately, no one is listening to me because if there were, who would give a %%%% about Jessica Simpson? ? As being reported all over the internet/news, the editor-in-chief of a weekly magazine is ?saying that that Kim could make as much as ?3 million dollars for the first images of Kim?s baby and . . .will be able to make money from TV Specials, gifts, baby showers and baby parties.?

?

Keep in mind that Kim made close to $20,000,000 (actually, I thought it was much more) from her ?wedding? to Kris Humphries. (and BTW, she will still likely still be Mrs. Kris Humphries when Baby Mama Kim and Kayne have that baby as those ?entertainment audits divorce proceedings are going slowly because Kris wants to now how much that E Entertainment production Kim? and especially Kris? made from sales of ?the wedding?.

?

So Kim, I know that you?re the ultimate businesswoman and every aspect of your life? since that ?movie? that you made ?with Ray J (Btw, ?it?s being reported that sales of ?The Tape? are up 80% on the news that Kim is going to be Kayne?s ?Baby Mama?)?has been sold to a news source and made you mucho $$$$$$. ?But we now have an opportunity to look at the adult children of ?high profile and highly public celebrity relationships , and it doesn?t look like life has been too easy for them. ?So I sincerely hope that you will back away from the temptation to publicize every aspect of ?motherhood?? because that would involve putting the camera and publicity machine on an innocent being? your child.

?

If you think that using ?motherhood ?and your child might be a great season or two in your reality show, ?next time you?re in LA, grab a coffee with Carrie Fisher or Chaz Bono or Cameron Douglas? or any other adult child who was caught in the publicity machine of their celebrity parents . ?Ask them how life is working out for them. ?I?m sure it will be very illuminating for you. ?And ?I know that you?ll learn a great deal.

?

A ?Ripping? Fine New Year | Renee Hobbs at the Media Education Lab

I'll be ripping clips from Gnomeo and Juliet

I?ll be ripping clips from Gnomeo and Juliet to help K-12 teachers teach media literacy.

My New Year?s Resolution: In 2013, I?ll be ?ripping? DVDs to make clip compilations for media literacy. And I?ll be encouraging K-12 teachers, school librarians, and technology educators to do the same.

Why? Because finally, as of October 26, 2012, the U.S. Copyright Office, as part of the DMCA 1201 rulemaking process, has declared that K-12 teachers can legally bypass copy-protected software on DVDs and online streaming media to make short clips.

How did this happen? As a copyright education activist, I participated in two rounds of rulemaking proceedings in 2009 and 2012 concerning the anticircumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which is the law that exempts YouTube and other ISPs from liability from copyright claims and criminalizes the circumvention of digital rights management (DRM) software that protects DVDs from being copied. I was in good company among other copyright education activists including Peter DeCherney, Martine Rife, Spiro Bolos, and the ALA?s Jonathan Band. Professors Victoria Phillips and Peter Jaszi supported my work through the Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Law Clinic at Washington College of Law at American University.

Every three years, citizens can protest if they believe their fair use rights have been compromised by the current law; the Copyright Office pores over the petitions, weighs the pros and cons, and then offers recommendations to the Librarian of Congress, who ultimately grants or denies the exemptions.

In 2009, we were successful in expanding the law so that college professors and film/media students can legally ?rip? DVDs for fair use purposes. In 2012, we were successful in expanding the law to include the right of teachers in kindergarten through twelfth grade!

Here?s the fine print: ?The person engaging in the circumvention must believe and have reasonable grounds for believing that the circumvention is necessary to achieve the desired criticism or comment, and where the circumvention is undertaken solely in order to make use of short portions of the motion pictures for the purpose of criticism or comment in the following instances: (i) In noncommercial videos; (ii) in documentary films; (iii) in nonfiction multimedia ebooks offering film analysis; and (iv) for educational purposes by college and university faculty, college and university students, and kindergarten through twelfth grade educators.? You can read the text of the Copyright Office decision here.

Why it matters. By asserting that K-12 educators have the right to circumvent encryption to make fair use of copy-protected DVDs and online digital media for teaching and learning, the law begins to move beyond the needs of large-scale content owners to include the rights of educators and students.

But if K-12 educators don?t take advantage of their new legal rights, has the law really changed? This new provision of the law is definitely a ?use it or lose it? situation ? if we can?t demonstrate the need for the special exemption in 2015, we may lose it. So, my friends, get ?ripping.? Unleash your creativity to create new kinds of educational materials with film DVDs. To help you learn how, here?s a ?how to? lesson on using the free software Handbrake to rip on a MAC and here?s how to do it on a PC. And please, inspire your colleagues by posting your own plans for ?ripping? in the comment space below.

First things first. You might wonder why I?ve set my sights on ?ripping? clips from Gnomeo and Juliet (2011, dir: Kelly Asbury). Of course, there?s the wonderful opportunity to hear my favorite classic Elton John songs (like ?Your Song,? for example). But the film has so many possibilities for exploring literary concepts like adaptation and intertextuality and for discussing the concept of nostalgia as it shapes the production of films for child audiences.

Among the gems in this film is the infomercial for the Terrafirminator, the ?un-neccesarily powerful? lawnmower that?s ?a weapon of grass destruction,? so intimidating that ?your lawn will be afraid to grow!?

After viewing the commercial, the gnomes use a laptop to order this high-tech lawnmower.

After viewing the commercial, the gnomes use a laptop to order this high-tech lawnmower.

It?s a classic example of those Saturday-morning high-pressure sales pitches we see on TV.? And even very young children will recognize the now-familiar trope of slow-motion ninja fighting when it occurs in the timeless conflict between the red gnomes and the blue gnomes. I can imagine playing the ?Spot the Reference Humor? game, where students clap their hands when they recognize an example, using this activity to discuss the complex interpretations viewers make as part of the film viewing experience. Of course, older students will enjoy the chance to discuss how and why the Shakespeare tragedy is bizarrely altered to create the happy ending required for a children?s film.

Now that the U.S. Copyright Office has permitted K-12 educators to ?rip? videos for media literacy education, we can celebrate! Happy New Year 2013!

Ubuntu teaser counts down to January 2nd launch, hints at touchbased OS

"So close, you can almost touch it." The Ubuntu home page is currently dominated by a banner with that teaser, along with a clock counting down to 8AM ET on Wednesday, January 2nd. Our guess is that the pre-CES announcement may focus on mobile, with a touch-friendly interface possibly on the horizon. During a Slashdot Q&A in December, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth clued readers in on the company's plans to bring the OS to mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, as part of a strategy to familiarize desktop users with the Linux-based operating system. While this week's announcement may fall in line with that objective, it's likely to be just one part of the equation, with 14.04 LTS not set to launch until April 2014 at the earliest. Either way, we have more than a day to go before Ubuntu's mystery is unveiled, so tune your browser to the source link below to join in on the countdown fun.

[Thanks, Brian]

Adam Lambert slams 'Les Miserables' stars

By Rebecca Macatee, E! Online

Efrem Lukatsky / AP

So, did Adam Lambert really want to play Jean Valjean or something? The " American Idol" alum was pretty harsh about the "Les Miserables" cast's vocal skills, tweeting Sunday that the music "suffered massively (because of) great actors PRETENDING to be singers."

"It's an opera," he clarified. "Hollywood movie musicals treat the singing as the last priority. (Dreamgirls was good)"

Anne Hathaway rates her 'Les Mis' performance as 'eh'

"And I do think it was cool they were singing live- but with that cast, they should have studio recorded and sweetened the vocals," he wrote, adding, "I felt like I should ignore the vocals and focus on the emotional subtext- but the singing was so distracting at times it pulled me out."

Lambert was impressed with Anne Hathaway's vocals, describing her performance as "breathtaking."

He also mused that "the industry will say 'these actors were so brave to attempt singing this score live' but why not cast actors who could actually sound good?"

Check out more pics from 'Les Mis'

"Sorry for being so harsh," he wrote. "but it's so True!"

Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion.

NORTH CAROLINA OPERA TO PERFORM WAGNER CONCERT ...

NC Opera tickets

North Carolina Opera will open its 2012-2013 season on Jan. 27, 2013 at 3 p.m., with a concert of the music of Richard Wagner , in honor of the bicentennial of the composer?s birth, in Meymandi Concert Hall in Duke Energy Center in Raleigh. The concert will include favorite selections from several of Wagner?s most popular operas, including Act I of Die Walk?re, in what is thought to be the first performance from Wagner?s Ring Cycle in the Triangle, Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walk?re, as well as excerpts from Die Meistersinger, Tristan und Isolde and The Flying Dutchman.

Internationally acclaimed talent will perform, including tenor Jay Hunter Morris, who sings the famously difficult role of Siegfried in Wagner?s Ring Cycle with the Metropolitan Opera; Elizabeth Bishop, who has sung leading Wagner roles at the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera, as Sieglinde; and Metropolitan Opera bass Peter Volpe as Hunding. NCO Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Timothy Myers will lead 80 members of the North Carolina Opera Orchestra. The two-hour performance will be sung in German with English supertitles.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was one of the most important composers of the nineteenth century. Over a twenty-five year period he created the epic four-opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung, based on Germanic and Norse mythology. The Ring tells the story of the struggle of redemptive love against lust for power, played out over no less a backdrop than the creation and destruction of the world. To tell the story Wagner created a new musical language and even designed a new theater and new instruments. NCO?s performance will include these ?Wagner tubas? in the complete first act of The Valkyrie, the second opera of the cycle.

?North Carolina Opera is excited to perform this amazing collection of Wagner opera in concert, not only because it will be an incredible musical feast of some of opera?s most important and beautiful music on the occasion of the bicentennial of the composer?s birth, but also because it will feature some of opera?s top talents.? said Eric Mitchko, General Director of North Carolina Opera.

With an expansive repertoire of symphonic, ensemble and operatic works, Timothy Myers has proven himself as a conductor of exceptional diversity. His recent engagements include the Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts, Opera Africa, Houston Grand Opera, the North Carolina and Milwaukee symphony orchestras, the Wolf Trap and Central City festivals, and numerous other projects spanning four continents. In 2009 Myers was appointed by Lorin Maazel as the first ever Associate Conductor of the Castleton Festival, where during his two year tenure he was entrusted with multiple symphonic and opera performances. As the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of North Carolina Opera, Timothy is one of the youngest artistic leaders in American opera. His artistic vision has broadened the company?s repertoire to include a wider variety ranging from Handel to Glass, as well as the creation of innovative and stimulating productions of the classic repertoire. Myers has been engaged for assistant/associate positions with the New York Philharmonic, New York City Opera, London BBC Symphony, as well as principal guest conductor and artistic advisor of the Palm Beach Symphony. He has conducted the Jerusalem Symphony, American Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic, the opera companies of Palm Beach, Anchorage and Asheville, the Bard Festival, and Music Academy of the West.

Jay Hunter Morris began the 2012-13 season with his appearance in the principal role of Captain Ahab in Jake Heggie?s celebrated opera, Moby Dick, at San Francisco Opera.? He performed in Florence as Siegmund inDie Walk?re and perform with the Los Angeles Opera as Erik Die Fliegende H?llander. Mr. Morris returns to The Metropolitan Opera for revival performances of The Ring as Siegfried and continues to Glimmerglass Festival for Erik. He makes his debut at Vienna Konzerthaus under the baton of Kent Nagano for performances of Schoenberg?s Gurrelieder. Recent successes include concert performances of Tristan Tristan und Isolde at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia Valencia and his appearance in the role of Siegfried in the Metropolitan Opera?s new production of the complete Ring Cycle which was broadcast worldwide. Mr Morris embarked on his Ring career when he covered Siegfried Siegfried and G?tterd?mmerung at Seattle Opera in 2009, and the following season at Los Angeles Opera. He also covered the role of Siegmund Die Walk?re during LA Opera?s Ring Cycle in 2010.? In 2011, he made his debut as Siegfried at San Francisco Opera with great success under the baton of Donald Runnicles. One of the hallmarks of Mr. Morris? career is his participation in some of the most noted new work in contemporary opera.? He has created many roles in world premieres, among them the role of Captain James NolanDoctor Atomic at San Francisco Opera, a role he reprised with the Netherlands Opera the following season;? the role of Markyin Cronenburg?s The Fly (Howard Shore) at Th??tre du Ch?telet in Paris, (which he revived at Los Angeles Opera under the baton of Placido Domingo); the role of Unferth in Elliott Goldenthal and Julie Taymor?s Grendel, a performance he repeated in the 2006 Lincoln Center Festival.?

Elizabeth Bishop has been praised by Opera News for her ?gorgeous voice? and is in equal demand for both opera and concert performances across the country. Her 2012-13 season engagements include her first Azucena in Il trovatore with Utah Opera, her first Sieglinde in Die Walk?re with North Carolina Opera, and her return to the Metropolitan Opera for M?re Marie in Dialogues des Carm?lites. Her other Met roles have included Venus in Tannh?user, the title role in Gluck?s Iphig?nie en Tauride, Fenena in Nabucco, and Second Norn in the worldwide Live in HD cinecast of G?tterd?mmerung. Ms. Bishop sings regularly with Washington National Opera, where her roles have included Gertrude in Hamlet, Eboli in Don Carlo, and the Marquise de Merteuil in Conrad Susa?s The Dangerous Liaisons. With Washington Concert Opera she has sung Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana and the Princess Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur. She has enjoyed a long relationship with San Francisco Opera, appearing there most recently as Fricka in both Das Rheingold and Die Walk?re. She has sung Waltraute in G?tterd?mmerung with the Dallas Opera, M?re Marie with both Deutsche Oper Berlin and Pittsburgh Opera, Eboli with the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier with Donald Runnicles and the Atlanta Symphony, Amneris in Aida with the Atlanta Opera, and Offred in Poul Ruders?s The Handmaid?s Tale with Minnesota Opera. Elizabeth Bishop has appeared as soloist with Amsterdam?s Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Malaysian Philharmonic.

Bass Peter Volpe continually receives critical and popular acclaim on four continents. Possessing a vast and ever-expanding repertoire of over 80 roles in six languages, his captivating style and interpretive skill embraces the depth of historical and fictional characters. Of a recentportrayal as Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Opera News said he ?managed to create in his single aria and scene an impressive dignity. His full-bodied bass and great candor of tone, together with his intelligent interpretation, won him a well-deserved ovation.? In the current season, performances include Ramfis in Aida at Michigan Opera Theatre, Sparafucile in Rigolettoat Manitoba Opera, Ferrando inIl Trovatoreat Arizona Opera, Zuniga in Carmen at the Florentine Opera, the bass soloist in Verdi?s Requiem with the Chattanooga Symphony, and his role debut as Daland in The Flying Dutchman with Glimmerglass Opera.? In addition he will perform Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoorwith Portland Opera and Philip II in Don Carlo at Austin Lyric Opera.

The Wagner program will include the following, in the order in which they will be presented: Prelude to Die Meistersinger, ?M?gst du, mein Kind? from The Flying Dutchman, ?Fanget an!? from Die Meistersinger, Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walk?re, ?Mild und leise? from Tristan Und Isolde, Intermission and Act I of Die Walk?re.

The House Designers Blog ? 2012's Best-Selling House Plans from ...

The editors of The House Designers present the 10 best-selling house plans of 2012 from a collection of over 6,000 home designs from America?s leading architects and designers. These popular home designs share many similarities, including size, energy-efficiency and open and flexible living spaces. Of the top 10 home plans, 9 were less than 2,500 sq. ft. When it came to architectural style, all of these homes were craftsman, cottage and ranch house plans with a preference for attached garages, basement foundations and bonus spaces. Each plan features an outdoor living space in its design from lanais to barbeque patios to in-ground pools. Nine were one-story homes ? a trend that is expected to continue as Baby Boomers age and new homeowners look for floor plans to age in place.

?We found that these 10 house plans are representative of the new home design trends of 2012 which include outdoor living spaces, cost-effective designs, green design elements and building products, open floor plans and bonus spaces,? said Tammy Crosby, Chief Operating Officer of The House Designers. ?Homeowners and builders are looking for smaller floor plans, but don?t want to sacrifice luxury amenities and aesthetics of homes with much larger footprints, which is why these house plans are so popular.?

Here is a list of the top 10 best-selling house plans of 2012 from The House Designers:

1 ? For the third year in a row, the L?Attesa di Vita House Plan remains The House Designers? best-selling design. At 2,091 sq. ft. this versatile craftsman house plan features every amenity a homeowner could desire including a deluxe master suite, office, open kitchen and family room with a cozy breakfast nook and walk-in pantry. For outdoor living space there?s a lanai and barbeque porch with fireplace. It?s easy to extend your living space with a 349 sq. ft. bonus room above the two-car garage and optional basement floor plan with a spacious guest suite. View the floor plans and 25 images of this popular home design.

2 ? Similar in design to the L?Attesa di Vita is the La Meilleure Vie House Plan with its gorgeous blend of stone and wood exterior. This home is 2,847 sq. ft. and features a three-car garage with a large 934 sq. ft. bonus room designed as a recreational space with a media, game and billiards room. Entertaining is made easy with a large family room and amenity-filled kitchen that opens to a covered lanai and barbeque porch. View this craftsman cottage house plan.

3 ? The trend in ranch house plans with a craftsman, cottage styling continues with the third most popular home from The House Designers called the Montagna di Grazioso House Plan. This home was designed with great attention to detail to maximize its 2,106 square footage including a fabulous kitchen design for a small space featuring innovative storage solutions and plenty of workspace and seating. A walk-in pantry is essential for homeowners who like to stock up on supplies. View this craftsman house plan.

?You would think that these top three homes would be costly to build because of all the stone and wood, but the opposite is true thanks to companies like Fypon?, Therma-Tru?, Cultured Stone? by Boral? and Ply Gem?,? said Crosby. ?These companies offer gorgeous veneer, fiberglass and polyurethane products that mimic the look of the real product without the high cost or maintenance. Because they are lightweight and easy to use they are favored among builders as well.?

4 ? The Long Meadow is an elegant country house plan with a craftsman fa?ade and flexible interior design. A three-car garage, screened porch, spacious country kitchen, a 1,535 sq. ft. bonus area and an optional 2,352 sq. ft. basement make this home irresistible! View the floor plans to this country cottage house plan, including the finished basement floor plan.

5 ? The Vita Encantata House Plan joins the top three best-selling house plans in its flair for exterior appeal and love of entertaining with outdoor living spaces and an open kitchen and great room. There?s a 302 sq. ft. bonus space above the two-car garage and an optional finished basement to extend the home?s 1,838 sq. ft. to almost double its size. Take a tour of this popular craftsman cottage house plan with European styling by clicking here.

6 and 7 ? While most homeowners expect a certain level of green elements in their home design, many are looking for a higher standard of green building, which is why interest in The House Designers exclusive collection of ENERGY STAR and Green House Plans continues to grow. The 1st place winner of the 2012 ENERGY STAR Home Design Competition is the sixth most popular house plan, followed by the popular Tres Le Fleur House Plan. These homes are extremely energy efficient, aesthetically appealing and well designed for their square footage.

8, 9 and 10 ? The final three house plans are classic craftsman ranch house plans designed with room to grow. The Halstad House Plan is just under 3,000 sq. ft. and features a functional floor plan with two bedrooms and a 581 sq. ft. bonus space above the three-car garage. When it comes to curb appeal and room for indoor/outdoor entertaining this home is a solid ten.
