Georgian opposition supporters flood capital

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? An estimated 100,000 opposition supporters thronged the center of Georgia's capital on Saturday in a show of strength days ahead of a parliamentary election that presents the toughest challenge to the future of Mikhail Saakashvili's government since he became president nearly nine years ago.

The capital, Tbilisi, where a third of Georgia's population lives, long ago turned against Saakashvili. Many people here are disturbed by what they describe as his authoritarian rule, pointing to his control over parliament, the courts and the prosecutor's office.

"He created a system of oppression and covered it with the pretty facade of democracy," said Dali Dvalishvili, who attended the boisterous campaign rally. Although trained as a lawyer, the 28-year-old woman said she was unable to work in a system "where the prosecutor's office dictates everything."

Under Saakashvili, the former Soviet republic has become a U.S. ally and worked toward closer integration with NATO and the European Union. In Monday's election, the president is under pressure to prove his commitment to democracy by holding a free and fair vote.

The election has added significance because it ushers in a new political system that will give greater powers to the parliament and prime minister. After Saakashvili's second and last term ends next year, the party that has a majority in parliament will have the right to name the prime minister, who will acquire many of the powers now held by the president.

Saakashvili's United National Movement, which now holds nearly 80 percent of the seats in parliament, is up against Georgian Dream, a coalition formed by Bidzina Ivanishvili, a billionaire businessman who made his fortune in Russia.

Most observers see the race as too close to call, although they give the governing party the edge.

The mood was upbeat on Saturday as people of all ages gathered on Freedom Square for Ivanishvili's giant campaign rally. Many wore Georgian Dream T-shirts in blue, white or black.

"Saakashvili's system based on lawlessness and torture should be destroyed," Ivanishvili told the crowd.

Saakashvili's campaign was hit hard by the release two weeks ago of shocking videos showing prisoners in a Tbilisi jail being beaten and sodomized. The government moved quickly to stem the anger, replacing Cabinet ministers blamed for the abuse and arresting prison staff, but many saw the videos as illustrating the excesses of his government.

What Apple, Microsoft and the Rest of Them Don?t Get

Apple, Microsoft, Dell, IBM, Google, all of them ? the companies that make the hardware and software we use ? are, it would seem, ignorant, probably willfully so, of an important thing. We use their hardware and software in our work. Many individuals are like miniature institutions or corporations. Our HR department, our payroll department, our accounting department, our R&D department, our car pool, and everything consists of a handful of machines (a car, a desktop, a mobile device, a printer) and a single person to staff them all (you, me, whatever). We do quite a bit to implement hardware and software combinations that do the things we need. We have an address book, a way to use a phone, a file storage system, we install and maintain software to produce documents, keep track of numbers do other stuff. And we use the readily available standard hardware and software to do this, thinking all along that this is a good idea.

Now, I?m going to give you two scenarios, one imagined one real, to underscore why this is a huge problem. These two scenarios have very different meanings, and I?ll let you work that out.

Scenario 1 (false, but something like it could happen): Almost everyone is using the software produced by a single large corporation for much of their needs. For example, Microsoft Office is being used by most individuals who run businesses for documents, spreadsheets, data management, communications, etc. Then, one day, a Vice President at that large software company convinces the marketing department that there would be a great deal of positive publicity if they started to integrate a Holiday Celebration mode in their office suite, so that every document produced, including emails, would be linked to a template and the template would celebrate the current holiday. They also decide that launching this as a surprise would be fun, and they start with Easter. So, suddenly, without warning, every single document produced by a large number of us, starting on Good Friday and running through Sunday, has an easter bunny and a drawing of some bearded guy suspended, dead, on an ancient Roman torture device and he has a halo. Letters sent by the consultant working on a Mideast Peace mission for the United Nations representing an Israeli concern, being sent to the PLO have Jesus Christ on the Cross, and a bunny, on every one of them, for example. This would obviously cause problems, and it would be an entirely inappropriate decision on the part of the software company.

Scenario 2 (really happened, names obscured to protect the innocent): About 30 years ago, a reasonably large government agency was involved in negotiations to transfer a large parcel of valuable urban land, via a 100 year lease, from that agency?s use as a parking lot to a different agency?s use as contribution to building a sports stadium. In other words, a parking lot sitting in the middle of a downtown district being rehabilitated would get a new hotel and sports stadium built on it, as the center piece of that rehabilitation. Said agency had the last access to the critically important legal documents to allow this to happen, the team of lawyers made the final changes, the agency staff and director carefully went over every word of the document, then it was photocopied on a new fancy photocopy machine leased form a major hardware provider that I?m sure you?ve heard of.

About every ten pages, though, a two-line high strip of the sheet at a random location would not copy, but instead, be blank space. And, as it turns out, the only effect this had on the legal documents was to delete a very important sentence from the end of a very important paragraph, without any evidence that this ever happened. The missing data was noticed in a final proof read, a critically important meeting was postponed, the contracts shredded, and new photocopies made but this time with the paper oriented 90 degrees (the copier was capable of this) so that missing data would show up as a vertical stripe up and down the page, and those pages could be replaced. It was a mess. The executive director of the agency had the reps from the photocopy company in his office the next day and at the same time had his employees move all the machines in all of the agency?s buildings outside next to the nearest dumpster. The reps were instructed to pick the machines up and later, when a new contact for new hardware was arranged, all the machines were fitted with a warning. Other bad things happened to the photocopy company because of this incident.

Oh, what the heck, I might as well add a third scenario: The Map app that came with Apple?s IOS 6. Say no more.

Oh, and just so you know that I?m not being anti-Apple here, I?ll add two more: Unity, and every upgrade to Windows by Microsoft. These are all examples of changes done entirely for marketing reasons and that break current workflow.

When one sets up one?s hardware and software, one imagines efficiency. One imagines effectiveness. One imagines cool-ness.

One imagines sitting at one?s computer, and you get a call from an associate?

?We need such a such a thing to happen, can you make that happen? Now? Or we?re dead.?

And you start clicking on the keyboard and swiping the mouse around on your desk. Windows open on your computer and information flashes across them. Other windows open as still others close, various documents are accessed and various information flows form one bit of software to another. Within a minute or so emails with attachments are flying through Tubes on the Internet to far flung and important places and they make things happen. Nobody dies today. You kicked ass.

But what really happens is this. You?ve got everything pretty much working. For collaborative reasons, you are using Google Docs. You get that phone call. You go to open Google Docs and Google stops you. It wants you to upgrade your security questions. What was the name of your first dog? It wants to know the name of your fucking first dog. You never had a dog. You need to get to the documents, to make things fly through the intertubes. You open up another web site and it seems to have forgotten that you had clicked the ?remember me? button and you have to log in again. What was that password? Meanwhile you flip open your laptop and turn it on, only to discover that it has chosen this moment to scan the entire hard drive for errors. Once that is done, the system starts an automatic upgrade and you need to reboot it three times. Meanwhile one of the pieces of software you usually use, that you need to access right now to get some data, has stopped working because it conflicts with some time-saving application you installed yesterday. Just then, when you open the document you?ve been working on for three days and go to turn it into a PDF file, you discover that your word processing software can?t handle files over 35 megabytes in size, your email system will not send them, and you can?t upload them to your web site because the arbitrary limit on document size set by the server is 10 megs. So all the work you did in preparation for this sudden emergency kick-ass deployment simply can not be used, sent, or accessed at all by anyone.

And that is when you realize the truth: The hardware and software you are using is a toy.

The hardware you get to use, and the software you get to use, as a mere ?end user? (the EU in the EULA), as distinct from a company that produces much of its own software, has an IT department, and never upgrades or changes anything until it has been tested out?the hardware and software you get to use?is a toy, and in fact, not a very good toy. And the purveyors of that hardware and software do not seem to understand, or even know about, the possibility that you use their products for real live grown up stuff.

This is what the boneheads a Microsoft, Apple, Google, Dell, IBM, the rest of them, have produced for us. Quirky toys that don?t work when you need them to work.

Why is that?

High debate stakes: Romney looks to gain momentum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Barack Obama is cruising into the presidential debates with momentum on his side, yet he's still struggling to revive the passion and excitement that propelled him to the White House. Mitt Romney is grasping for his last, best chance to reboot his campaign after a disastrous September.

The fierce and determined competitors in the tight race have a specific mission for the three debates, the first of which is Wednesday night in Denver.

Obama, no longer the fresh face of 2008, must convince skeptical Americans that he can accomplish in a second term what he couldn't in his first, restoring the economy to full health.

Romney, anxious to keep the race from slipping away, needs to instill confidence that he is a credible and trusted alternative to the president, with a better plan for strengthening the economy.

"The burden in many ways is heavier on Romney," says Wayne Fields, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis who specializes in political rhetoric. "What we see right now is an uncertainty about whether he's ready for the job."

For all the hundreds of campaign appearances, thousands of political ads and billions of dollars invested in the race, this is a singular moment in the contest. Upward of 50 million people are expected to watch each of the debates, drawing the largest political audience of the year.

Forty-one percent of Americans reported watching all of the 2008 debates, and 80 percent said they saw at least a bit, according to a Pew Research Center poll.

That intense interest tends to crowd out everything else for a time, adding to the debates' importance. With polls indicating that Obama has been gaining ground steadily in the most competitive states, the pressure is on Romney to turn in a breakout performance.

The Denver debate, 90 minutes devoted to domestic policy, airs live at 9 p.m. EDT, with the two men seated side by side in elevated director's chairs. Romney and Obama debate again Oct. 16 in Hempstead, N.Y., and Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla. Vice President Joe Biden and Republican Paul Ryan have their lone debate Oct. 11 in Danville, Ky.

With early or absentee voting already under way in more than half the states, any first impressions created in the debates could well be last impressions. What the candidates say is sure to matter immensely, but how they say it may count for even more.

"We remember visual impressions from debates more than we remember specific words," says Alan Schroeder, a Northeastern University professor who's written a history of presidential debates.

Whether the candidates smile or grimace, strike a confident or defensive pose, speak with a resonant or strained tone of voice, it all matters. That may be particularly true for the all-important undecided voters and those still open to changing their minds.

Staunch Democrats and Republicans may well be firm in their choices, says Patti Wood, an Atlanta-based expert on body language, but if less partisan voters are "frightened in general about their lives, if they're insecure, they're going to pick the most charismatic person."

Both candidates have challenges to overcome on that score, according to Wood.

Obama, 51, has been sounding "very tired and very strained" lately, she says, and Romney, 65, "has a problem with appearing superior and cold."

Overall, she says, "Romney is looking a little bit younger than Obama right now," in terms of energy if not wrinkles.

Both candidates are experienced and competent debaters. But each, setting the judgment bar high for his opponent, is working overtime to puff up the skills of the other guy and play down his own debate credentials.

Romney recently described the president as "eloquent in describing his vision" during the 2008 debates. But the GOP nominee added that Obama "can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears."

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki stresses that Romney has been preparing for the debates with "more focus than any presidential candidate in modern history." Sketching sky-high stakes, Psaki says the Republicans fully expect the debates to be "their turning point" in the campaign.

The president himself mocked the idea that Romney still can alter the campaign dynamic.

"Every few days he keeps on saying he's going to reboot this campaign and they're going to start explaining very specifically how this plan is going to work ? and then they don't," he said last week while campaigning in Virginia.

For all their positioning, both candidates will use the debates to try to surmount the same challenges that they long have confronted.

Romney, frequently criticized for shifting his positions to sync up with the politics of the moment, needs to project "a kind of character, a kind of maturity that allows him to be presidential," says Fields.

Obama, an incumbent who's shown himself to be comfortable in the media glare, "doesn't have to prove that part," says Fields. "He has to prove that he has real answers to problems that have not been solved in his first term and for which there is a great deal of unrest."

Romney is sure to be questioned anew about his caught-on-video comment dismissing the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income tax as victims who won't take responsibility for their lives.

"How can Gov. Romney have such a profound misunderstanding of the people of this country?" Biden asked during an appearance Saturday in Fort Myers, Fla., "When I hear this talk, not just from Romney and Ryan, but from this new Republican Party ... I don't recognize the country they're talking about."

Former President Bill Clinton, offering a bit of unsolicited advice to the opposition, says Romney would be wise not to "double down on that 47 percent remark."

"That will cause difficulties, because we now know that the overwhelming number of those people work and have children," Clinton said recently. He added that the most important job for Romney is to "find a way to relate to more people in these debates and speak to more of them."

Speaking in Derry, N.H., Saturday morning, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan contrasted the economic stagnation he said will continue if Obama is re-elected with the prosperity he said he and Romney will create, saying the "Live Free or Die" state wants to "live free and prosper."

Ryan later spoke to a U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance rally Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio and recalled when Obama talked at a San Francisco fundraiser in 2008 about bitter small-town voters who "cling" to their guns or religion. "This Catholic deer hunter is guilty as charged, and I'm proud of that fact," Ryan said.

On Saturday, the Obama campaign posted a Web video urging debate viewers take Romney's claims of private-sector experience with a grain of salt. "Remember, it wasn't about creating jobs," the video says. It includes testimony from steel- and paper-plant workers laid off after Bain Capital takeovers.

Also Saturday, the Romney campaign announced plans for his wife Ann to speak at a rally Monday in Henderson, Nev., where Obama is planning three days of private debate preparation. And Romney points to Syria, Libya and Iran to criticize Obama's foreign policy as "one of passivity and denial" in his weekly podcast.

Meantime, there's no shortage of advice swirling around the two candidates: loosen up, study up, be aggressive, don't overdo it, admit mistakes, don't apologize, project confidence, ooze emotion, use humor, make eye contact, get more sleep.

It's enough to paralyze even the most skilled orator if not kept in perspective.

"That's what so tricky about this," says Schroeder. "Debates themselves are this kind of interesting blend of the choreographed and the spontaneous. ... What you want is for the candidate to be prepared but not to overlook those opportunities to improvise when you see an opening."

The stakes are lower for the debate between Biden and Ryan. It offers the prospect of a looser and more entertaining discussion between two candidates with vastly different styles and personalities.

In 2008, Biden's debate with Republican Sarah Palin attracted 70 million viewers, easily topping the 63 million high-water mark for the presidential debates that year.

Daily Grill: New Drinks, New Food and a Recently Robbed Reporter ...

After a brief national scare this week, it turns out the U.S. won?t be affected by a global shortage of bacon. That?s good news for the Daily Grill at 18th and M st. in Dupont.

After a three-week hiatus, The restaurant?s bar reopened last night and members of the media were invited to see its new look and try the new happy hour specials. Two of the new menu items, the Capitol Dog and the Crab Cake BLT, are heavy on the bacon.

Along with new food and beers on the menu, the bar was gutted and revamped with new seats, TVs and light fixtures. Here?s how the night went:

We met Carl?

Sitting with the rest of the media who attended was Carl Pierre. He writes for InTheCapital.com, a startup about startups and the social scene in D.C. ?You forget how much you actually use your phone until you don?t have one,? Pierre said unprompted as he watched another guest type on her phone. It turns out Pierre was without a phone last night because he had recently been robbed at H Street Country Club in NE, D.C. He had placed his wallet/phone holder on a table. Inside was $200 cash, his credit cards and his iPhone 4S. He turned away for a flash and it was gone. Pierre used a GPS app on his friend?s phone to locate his. He saw it moving and he followed it a few blocks before approaching ?a bad neighborhood.? He gave up on the chase and has resigned to purchasing the iPhone 5.

More on the food, drinks and who showed up?

The food and drinks?

Our first drink the Vitamin C, an orange juice-like martini, made with Ketel One Citroen. The chef, Phil Kastel, brought out some of the new Happy Hour food. In addition to the Capitol Dog and Crab Cake BLT, we had the Parmesan truffle frites (french fries with garlic and cheese), the Sausage and Arugula Lavash (which is a nicer way of saying ?pizza?) and the Short Rib Sliders (little pork sandwiches). Kastel works out of L.A. and he developed each new item on the menu. Bob Spivak, the President and CEO of Daily Grill?s parent company Grill Concepts, Inc., was on hand to walk us through the experience. ?In five years, we?ll be laughing about Budweiser, Miller Lite, Coors Light? all those beers that aren?t really beers,? he said. He hopes Americans take a more epicureanapproach to beer and start drinking more regional ones. Of the 10 new beers the Daily Grills is offering, six are brewed on the East Coast. We tried the Dogfish Head Midas Touch, a beer brewed in Delaware and ? similar to Blue Moon.

Notables: D.C. Publicist Dannia Hakki and USA Today travel reporters Jayne Clark and Nancy Trejos. Clark showed off her freshly-designed USA Today business cards, which feature the new big blue dot logo. Trejos is still using the old cards.

Quotable: ?I don?t want to be in a story about journalism perks.?? Trejos

Own Ward, Bay View Gallery Night 2012 ? Local Trolley

Cramming activities into the last clement days of the year isn?t too difficult in Milwaukee and no neighborhood rises to the occasion quite like Bay View. There?s the South Shore Farmers Market and The Frolics. There was Pabst Fest and Bay View Bash, Art Beat, that other crap I?m missing, and now Bay View Gallery Night, which kicks off tomorrow night. Yes, a Gallery Night so cool it happens a full month before the rest of the City?s.

On the serrated butter knife?s edge of this madness, Made in Milwaukee and Alchemist Theatre safely press their pointy little teeth into Milwaukee?s penchant for creative to-do?s du jour. Bay View?s abundance of venues and pop-up dioramas basically will allow you to just walk down K K without a plan. But here are a few places and artists to see.

Alchemist Theatre and Bay View Lounge

They co-sponsor the night and will have photography of Shane Gardner on the walls and music of Todd Richards and the Surround Sound Experiment in the ether. What?s coolest about this stop? The Alchemist Theatre has a full out chic/cheeky dive concept lounge rarely open when no show is on stage.

If you?re not sure about theatre, you can at least absorb one of the best social atmospheres Milwaukee has to offer without committing a couple our to stage entertainment. If you like it enough, you can vamp back in for the Alchemist?s upcoming Hollowed Eve themed onstage freak-you out live performance The Alchemist Eye.

Amanda Iglinski at the Hide House

Usually all sorts of craziness goes on at the Hide House like church services and improvised musical shows. Most of that will probably still be going on tomorrow night and among others Amanda Iglinski?s works will perch on the vertical walls as a part of the first floor display. She?s a tremendous pop artist with intriguing vision that melds social commentary to the craft of picking images, motifs and colors to blend.

The Hide House will also have exhibits and B-Boy performances from the TRUE Skool camp, Bay View Arts Guild, Sara Risley, music, art studio open houses and egg rolls from Mamma?s Eggrolls.

Gao Gallery

Resident artist Jenie Gao will open her space to feature artwork of her contemporaries Steph Davies, Laura Macias Barrera, Zina Mussman, Rachel Quirk and live music. Gao Gallery occasionally offers instructional art workshops.

Stop by during Bay View Gallery Night and you?ll be able to screenprint a ready made design on one of your own garments or a T that you can purchase there. Jenie Gao?s star as a fine art purveyor is in full bloom and something to gaze upon for seeing what it looks like to go beyond just having talent in a particular medium.

Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing

Ink?s abound in this town, why stop now? I see calf tats are in. Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing will wet their needles publicly for the grand ole? first time, opening on BVGN?s expressive ocean swell. The Mil can?t get enough ink, how can you blame us, most of us live where our bodies are at the moment anyway.

The Rest Are The Best Anyway

If I were to drop a few more names for thirst quenching pit stops let?s jus throw Studio Lounge, Black Bird Bar, Boon and Crockett, Hector?s and Club Giribaldi out there arbitrarily. Bay View Gallery Night?s website has the full listing happenings complete with proper addresses and other vital information. I also hear that the new super brilliant Alterra will have a parking lot extavaganza of sorts to top it all with a mango.

Possible link between infants' regulatory behaviors and maternal mental health

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Functional somatic symptoms (FSS) are physical complaints, such as headaches, pain, fatigue, and dizziness, that cannot be explained medically. These symptoms affect 10-30% of children and adolescents and account for 2-4% of all pediatric doctor visits. A new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics finds that infants with regulatory problems (i.e., feeding, sleeping, and tactile reactivity) and/or maternal psychiatric problems may have an increased risk of FSS in later childhood.

It is believed that maternal anxiety and depression can influence the child's capacity to self-regulate, but infant problems can also exaggerate parental problems. Charlotte Ulrikka Rask, MD, PhD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, states, "Parents of infants with regulatory problems could be taught to help their infants regulate their behavioral and physiological state, which potentially could reduce the risk of later development of impairing FSS."

Dr. Rask and colleagues from Aarhus University Hospital and Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark prospectively assessed 1,327 5-7-year-old children who are part of the Copenhagen Child Cohort (6,090 children born around Copenhagen in 2000). Home health nurses assessed infants 4 times before they were 10 months of age. Maternal mental health was assessed by self-report 1-5 weeks after child birth, and researchers checked whether mothers had been diagnosed with a mental disorder during the infant's first year of life. Three overall factors were assessed: (1) infant regulatory factor; (2) maternal postnatal psychiatric illness; and (3) annual household income.

At 5-7 years of age, 23.2% of the children had FSS, with an increased prevalence in girls (27.6% versus 18.8%). Impairing, or severe, FSS was seen in 4.4% of the children. Limb pain, headaches, and stomach aches were the most frequent FSS reported. Thirteen mothers were diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety during their infants' first year of life; the infants of these mothers were 7 times more likely to develop FSS at 5-7 years of age. Infants with 2 or more regulating issues had a nearly 3-fold increased risk of FSS at 5-7 years of age. There was no association between impairing FSS and household income early in life.

Because recent studies have suggested that eating and sleeping problems during early childhood may be risk factors for mood and anxiety disorders and FSS (e.g., recurrent abdominal pain) later in life, early intervention is important for both parents and infants. Dr. Rask suggests, "Interventions should include strategies to improve maternal mental health and parents' ability to handle the infant's regulatory problems, as well as strategies that focus on infants who have multiple regulatory problems."

US Military Wants Space Planes, Reusable Rockets

Shrinking space budgets don't stop the U.S. military from dreaming about space planes or rockets capable of flying back and landing on their own.

Reusable launch vehicles capable of soaring into space and returning by flying through Earth's atmosphere like airplanes could potentially save millions on expensive launches that typically cost thousands of dollars per pound ? especially if they fly frequently. But U.S. military officers and researchers acknowledged the challenge of pushing for next-generation space vehicles during a time of budget cuts.

"Money is tight, and we have to make tough decisions on where to invest money," said Col. Scott Patton from Air Force Space Command. "In the long term, we need full spectrum launch capability at dramatically lower cost."

The U.S. government spent tens of millions of dollars on space plane programs in past decades ? not to mention the $3 billion National Aero-Space Plane project ? but most never got off the ground before cancellation. Such half steps need to change if the U.S. hopes to create a launch vehicle that can truly revolutionize launch costs, Air Force researchers said. [Evolution of the Space Plane (Infographic)]

"The reality is that if you're going to learn, you have to go out there and fly hardware," said Jess Sponable, a program manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Sponable and Patton represented two of the expert panel discussing reusable launch vehicles at the AIAA Space 2012 conference hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Pasadena, Calif., on Sept. 13.

Making the dream real

The dream of space planes has often raced ahead of reality ? original arguments for NASA's space shuttles envisioned flights once per week at a cost of just $20 million. But the space shuttle program ended up flying just several times per year at a cost of about $1.6 billion per flight.

The Air Force's robotic space plane X-37B, a miniature version of the space shuttle, has flown two missions aimed at testing satellite technologies, rather than paving the way for cheap, reusable launch vehicles. Like the retired space shuttle, X-37B launches aboard a rocket and flies back down to Earth after reentering the planet's atmosphere. [Photos: Air Force's Secret X-37B Missions]

"We've got to learn how to build and fly this class of system," Sponable said. "It's some strange, in-between hybrid that's not an aircraft and not a rocket."

The private space industry has also experimented with the space plane concept. SpaceShipOne, a private suborbital space plane, won the $10 million Ansari X Prize in 2004. But the air-launched vehicle and its SpaceShipTwo successor are more suited to carrying space tourists to the edge of space rather than lift heavy cargo.

Bringing rockets back

Perhaps the most promising reusable launch vehicle designs won't be space planes at all, but simply reusable rockets. SpaceX, the firm founded by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Elon Musk, has begun working on a reusable rocket concept called the Grasshopper that puts landing gear on a Falcon 9 rocket's core stage.

"We emphasize we don't care if [a solution] has wings or no wings ? we want maintenance to be minimal," Sponable said. "How you fly it and how it actually looks like is a secondary issue."

The Air Force Research Laboratory has also studied a reusable rocket concept under its Reusable Booster System (RBS) Pathfinderprogram. The "rocket-back" concept would involve the rocket firing its engines to reverse its climb and glide back down to an aircraft-style landing.

Rocket-back designs from Andews Space, Boeing and Lockheed Martin came out of the Phase I contracts that wrapped up this month. The next step would have involved a $55-75 million contract to build it, not including launch costs ? but the Air Force decided to discontinue funding and shelve the project.

"The program office was satisfied that at least one feasible system solution would have been proposed," said Jeffrey Zweber, program manager for RBS Pathfinder.

Driving down the launch cost

Program cancellations make the immediate future of space planes or reusable rockets seem uncertain. But the overall market and demand for space launch services continues to grow and could support new, cheaper ways to get into space, said David Byers, an independent consultant to the U.S. government on space propulsion and power.

The private space industry may end up paving the way during a time of less government spending ? especially with companies such as Elon Musk's SpaceX working to drive down launch concepts through its conventional Falcon rockets and its more experimental Grasshopper concept. Future space plane projects would do well to learn from the SpaceX example, Air Force researchers said.

"We need to reconcile why Elon was able to do what he did with the money spent, on an order of magnitude lower cost than what models would have predicted," Sponable said.

Zweber, Sponable's Air Force Research Laboratory colleague, also gave the cautious thumbs up for the SpaceX approach.

"I think we all wish them the best and hope they deliver on what they promise," Zweber said.

A Few Helpful Tips For Internet Marketing | Eric Chua : Life ...

Internet marketing is a vital component of having an online business. It has become crucial to promote your site on the Internet. This makes now the right time to get involved. Read this article for tips on Internet marketing.

Most people do not believe what is written within ads. That?s a legacy of years of misleading advertising that people have been exposed to. This means that what is said on your site must be backed up with concrete proof. Take advantage of positive reviews, photography and product reports. Do not make false statements. Your customers will trust your website if all your information is accurate and you are up front about your advertising. You should not take advantage of any person ? ever. With honest, non-deceptive business practices, you?ll earn a good reputation and gain a core of loyal, repeat customers.

You can improve your internet marketing by starting a blog and posting to it frequently. A blog is one more way to stay in touch with clients. Blogging adds more content to your website, which can give you a larger presence on the internet. This frequently translates into more traffic to your site.

TIP! Even if you plan to outsource your email marketing, you should know the basic methods behind Internet marketing. There are many fairly easy things you can use, including mass mailers, mailing lists and auto responders.

It?s a great idea to present your customers with a selection of special offers on you check-out page. If your customer places an order, offer them an additional product at reduced cost to maximize the sale and increase profits. This will make the customer feel appreciated and you can get rid of excess inventory at the same time.

As with any business, it is crucial that you gain and maintain your customers? trust. As you develop your marketing plan, you should only consider facts and statistics that are easily proven and valid. Testimonials from real customers and experts in the field are a great way to do this.

Offer incentives for people?s referrals. An incentive for a few referrals can translate into a lot more happy customers and increased sales for your business. People love getting stuff for free and the more traffic you get the higher your sales will be.

TIP! To make your internet business a success, take the time to evaluate the competition. Check out other websites in your field to discover what they could improve upon.

Discounts and freebies are very important when you are starting a marketing campaign. You can display the new, discounted price right beside the regular price, or simply offer a set discount on the entire order. Another thing you may do is use phrases that claim they can order now to pay a certain lower price instead of the usual price.

Use a lot of headlines on your websites and in ezines. These headlines should grab readers attention and showcase products sold at your site. Add graphics that showcase your products. Sometimes, graphics look more professional than headlines.

Another key to Internet marketing is your competition. Find out what is working for them and what isn?t, and keep track of their strategies. There is a lot that you can get from watching others. Learn from their mistakes and make your site more complete and original.

TIP! One way to become an authority or subject-matter expert is to compile a relevant glossary on your website. The glossary is a great source of information for all your current and prospective customers.

One terrific tool for internet marketing is putting a spot on your website where visitors can post reviews. If customers review your niche on your site, this will drum up new sales and also increase your Internet presence with more keywords.

Just like any other business venture, start out small when you are putting together your website. A search engine might overlook a site with too many indexed pages; while limiting your indexed pages could make you more visible with regards to the search engines.

Make sure to update your site?s content frequently. Visitors to your site that see outdated information may believe that your company is floundering and that getting in touch with you would be a waste. A website that is user-friendly and up-to-date is inviting for readers.

TIP! If you can write well, submit articles about your business to websites and magazines that accept such submissions. You can use your writing skills to promote your business or website by creating great copy and distributing it generally across the Internet, or to a more targeted audience, if preferred.

Make your readers and customers more comfortable on your site with the following tip. Make sure that your customers know that the site is secure and that you will not spam their inbox. You can do this by placing a privacy policy on the top right part of the page. Your customers will feel more comfortable purchasing items from you if they know their sensitive information is safe. They?ll never have to worry about identity theft when ordering from you!

Press releases are a good strategy to get the word out on the product you offer. A press release that informs people in a clear and concise manner is something that many sites online would publish, depending on the market. This can be an easy way to boost your profile.

A quality website is vital to a successful internet marketing campaign. Check to make sure your site is not outdated and everything works properly. If visitors cannot navigate your website properly, they will not purchase your product.

TIP! Potential customers that you are trying to reach may be interested in charities of all sorts. You can consider directing a percentage of the profits you bring in to a charity or two.

Make sure to give your customers opportunities to easily buy similar products to the one they have just purchased. If you sell a cookbook, for example, send the customer a link to other cookbooks that you sell. You can increase your sales by tailoring your product offerings to their purchasing trends.

Include the word ?limited? in your ad. A lot of people will go online to do their shopping because they get bored with what is available in their local stores. Online consumers seek unique products different from what they are used to seeing. Try selling something that is only out for a short period of time. People will think that it is special and buy it quickly.

Increasing the traffic to your website may be the single most important factor in your company?s success. There are many different ways you can accomplish this. There is a variety of knowledge available. Follow these helpful tips and you can find success

TIP! Do not think that internet marketing is a topic that can be taken lightly or with a haphazard approach. Get inspiration from the people that have succeeded before you.

Senior Leslie Blalock breaks the Foundations of Technology record for stacking 25 textbooks on her paper structure.

Senior Leslie Blalock is the record holder at CHS for suspending 25 textbooks on a 4-inch-tall paper and tape structure. Last year, she would?ve been reading about suspension on the computer. Now, she is taking what she has learned and trying her luck at a school record.

As of this school year, the use of computers in the Foundations of Technology course has been replaced with hands-on projects.

?This course has been updated to ensure all students have adequate opportunities to fully learn to apply concepts in real-world scenarios using a hands-on approach,? said Betsey Brown, director of the MCPS Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Principal Dr. Joan Benz supports the new curriculum because it connects to the science department.

?The course ties in very nicely with the science curriculum so it?s not out there as an isolated course by itself,? Principal Dr. Joan Benz said. ?It?s more project-oriented than it had been and not so much computer-based.?

Foundations of Technology teacher David Hurless also sees advantages in the new course.

?The students will benefit with the way the hands-on projects give them better thinking skills and better analyzing abilities for everyday projects,? Hurless said.

However, according to Hurless, removing the computer programming portion of the class may hinder student learning.

?Computers gave students more options to access the technology available and you could utilize the resources for student improvement,? Hurless said.

While Hurless believes it is too early to gauge how students feel about the new curriculum, freshman Nicole Menkart has positive feedback.

?At first I was really surprised that technology class had no computers, but I actually like it now that we have started working on projects,? Menkart said. ?It?s nice to learn the basics of building and tools, like how to build things in real life, before you learn how to do it on the computer.?

Not only have changes occurred in CHS?s Foundations of Technology curriculum, but a new course, Design Technology Solutions, is now offered as an alternative for students to fulfill the technology graduation requirement.

?All we had was Foundations of Technology, so it seemed like every child had to do Foundations of Technology because we didn?t have any choices,? Benz said. ?So, the state developed this new curriculum and new course to also meet the technology requirement.?

Senior Jessica Prussick enjoys the Design Technology Solutions class which emphasizes problem solving and collaborative projects.

?I like how the class is very interactive,? Prussick said. ?We get to engage in neat projects.?

According to Design Technology Solutions teacher Rebecca Smith, the course involves computer science, programming and robotics.

?Students are excited about using and programming with legos because it is all hands-on,? Smith said. ?The course consists of a lot of teamwork and building together.?

Too fat to fight: Is childhood obesity a national security threat?

"Too fat to fight," a new study by former Pentagon military chiefs, says school junk food and childhood obesity are a national security threat -- with more than a quarter of 17- to 24-year-old Americans too heavy to join the military if they wanted to.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / September 25, 2012

"Too Fat to Fight," a new report by former military leaders, points to junk food and childhood obesity as a national security threat. A Coca-Cola bottle is seen with other beverages in New York where a recent ban on supersize drinks has caused debate about what's most to blame for the nation's obesity epidemic.

More than 90,000 tons of junk food are being sold in American schools every year, is more than the weight of the aircraft carrier Midway. And that, warns a new study released today by a group of America?s retired military leaders, is a threat to national security.

The group called on Congress to take immediate steps to support initiatives to remove junk food and high-calorie drinks from schools, denouncing the availability of high sugar, salt, and fat snack foods in schools as more to blame for obesity than lack of physical activity.

These former leaders now command the group Mission Readiness, a national security organization of more than 300 retired admirals and generals and other senior military leader, that has classified childhood obesity as ?a threat to national security.?

According to the Army?s Accessions Command, responsible for recruiting and the initial training of new Army recruits, ?over 27 percent of all Americans 17 to 24 years of age ? over nine million young men and women ? are too heavy to join the military if they want to do so.?

Whether or not you are interested in your child growing up to serve in a military branch, those are some astonishing numbers.

These former military leaders ? including Richard Myers, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ,and James M. Loy, former Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security ? called today for school districts to limit the sale of junk food and for national legislation to enforce those limits and to fund better school lunch options that are more appealing while still being nutritious.

?This is not a spectator sport. It?s a team sport, a contact sport and we need parents on the team, but the reality is that kids are getting 40-50% of their calories in school daily,? Charles E. Milam, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy said at the organization?s release of the report in Washington today.

??We are working with the National PTA because removing the junk food from our schools should be part of comprehensive action, involving parents, school and communities, to help children make healthy food choices,? said David Carrier, spokesman for?Mission Readiness.
