Old reliable: After nervous start in 1943, trumpeter has played thousands of military services

BARRON, Wis. ? Chuck Kirkwood thought he was in trouble when he was called into the Barron High School office about 70 years ago.

Instead, he was asked to play taps for a military funeral. He accepted, and calculations are that he's performed at about 3,500 funerals and counting, the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reported (http://bit.ly/161E3lf).

"I was never in the service, but I feel so indebted to those who serve," Kirkwood, 84, said. "I feel I don't deserve a lot of credit for what I do. Those who have served and are serving should always be getting the honor ? not me."

It was 1943 when he was sent to the principal's office, recalling high school band director Francis White recommended Kirkwood play taps at military ceremonies when the person who normally performed was not available.

"I've been playing at military funerals ever since," Kirkwood said. "I've played for Veterans Day, Memorial Day, flag-raising ceremonies and a number of other events in Barron and many other communities around here. I enjoy it, but I have to say, I remember being a bit nervous that first time in high school."

Kirkwood in recent years has kept a log of military services in which he's performed. Based on an average of slightly more than 50 a year, he estimated he's played in more than 3,500 such services.

Kirkwood started playing the trumpet in an effort to help his breathing.

"I had asthma real bad as a kid, and my dad (Charles) was a pharmacist in Barron. A doctor friend suggested that I play a horn to help my breathing," Kirkwood said. "I started playing and haven't quit."

Kirkwood managed to play at military funerals even while doing mechanical work for 44 years for the Barron County Highway Department.

"When I first started doing it, I would take a couple hours of vacation, but then one of the other fellas I worked with talked to the Highway Committee and said Legionnaires weren't getting docked when they went, so then I didn't either," Kirkwood said. "I would take my suit to my mother's house, change clothes, play, change back and go back to work. I made up the time missed by working longer those days."

Google Unveils Revamped Zagat Website, Apps

Google today launched the first major update to Zagat since the search giant acquired it in Sept. 2011, updating the website and accompanying mobile apps.

Most notably, this also marks the first time Zagat content is available to all users for free, with no registration required.

The new Zagat features news and videos from local editors, as well as curated lists ("10 Hidden Restaurant Gardens Around DC"), powerful search, and map-based browsing, according to group product manager Gannon Hall.

"These days, the challenge in deciding where to go is not about a lack of information or user reviews, but finding accurate information and trusted opinions so you can quickly make informed decisions," Hall said in a blog post. "You can rely on Zagat's curated lists and summary reviews to cut through the clutter so you can find the perfect spot."

Foodies in Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and London will get the first taste of the updated Zagat, which will soon roll out to 50 more U.S. and international destinations, with more options like shopping, hotels, and other places of interest.

In advance of its expansion, the company will soon make existing ratings and reviews available on Zagat.com.

The updated Zagat mobile app is available now for free download in the Google Play store and the Apple iTunes Store.

Google picked up the famed site almost two years ago, with the intent of collaborating to "bring the power of Google search and Google Maps to [Zagat's] products and users, and to bring their innovation, trust and wealth of experience to our users," Google said at the time.

Google integrated Zagat into Google+ in May 2012 via the Google+ Local app. Last week, however, Google said the iOS version of G+ Local would retire on Aug. 7 since all of the app's features have since been incorporated into Google Maps.

Discover the new Zagat in the company's video below.

Prosecutors in talks over plea deal in Cleveland kidnappings, sources say

Aaron Josefczyk / Reuters

Ariel Castro at a pretrial hearing on Wednesday.

By Kate Snow, Richard Esposito and Erin McClam, NBC News

Prosecutors are in talks with Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man accused of kidnapping three women and holding them captive for a decade, about a plea deal that could allow him to avoid the death penalty, sources told NBC News on Thursday.

The sources said an agreement was expected as early as Friday.

Such a deal would forestall a trial, a prospect that threatened to force the city of Cleveland, not to mention the three women, to relive tales of what prosecutors say was Castro?s horror house of torture and rape.

?They?re hopeful that it?s going to come to a speedy conclusion,? Kathryn Joseph, a lawyer for one of the women, said Thursday.

Earlier this month, prosecutors heaped hundreds more criminal charges on Castro, bringing the total number of counts he faced to 977. He pleaded not guilty July 17 at a hearing in which the judge had to ask him to keep his eyes open.

The charges included kidnapping, rape, assault and attempted murder. The attempted murder charge was filed because one of the women told investigators that Castro had impregnated her and forced her to miscarry.

The women ? Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight ? were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004, according to investigators. They were freed in May after Berry broke partway through a door and screamed for help while Castro was out of the house.

The women broke their silence in a three-minute video July 9. In it, Knight said: ?I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face, and my head held high, and my feet firmly on the ground.?

The lead prosecutor in the case, Timothy McGinty of Cuyahoga County, never said whether he would seek the death penalty, only that he was considering it.

A trial was set to begin in August, and lawyers for the three women said that they wanted it wrapped up as soon as possible.

Castro is being held on $8 million bail.

Rep. Amash's Amendment To Defund The NSA's Domestic Phone Metadata Program Fails 205-217

2013-07-24_12h02_17Today Rep.?Amash?s amendment to the 2014 Defense Appropriations Bill failed in the House?on a vote of 205 in favor to 217 opposed. When it became known that the amendment would in fact come up for a vote, the powers of the status quo came together to decry its tenets as ham-fisted and irresponsible. The White House called the amendment a “blunt approach” that is not “the product of an informed, open, or deliberative process.” Naturally, the irony of that specific complaint resonates: The intelligence programs in question were not enacted with any of those forms of debate. To ask that their rescinding be held to a higher standard then their enaction is hubris of a real sort. Underlining how seriously those who are in favor of maintaining the phone record collection program took the amendment’s threat to yank its funding, General Alexander himself — the good general heads the NSA — gave briefings on the Hill to House Democrats and Republicans, albeit in different sessions. A formal statement from the White House and face time with the head of the NSA are some of the larger guns available for this sort of court press. The NSA has come under heavy scrutiny for its collection of both Internet data and telephonic records by privacy advocates, certain members of Congress, and what is sometimes referred to as the netroots — efforts that include broad surveillance of U.S. citizens and the retention of information relating to their actions. Those in favor claim that it doesn’t violate the Fourth Amendment and is a key tool in the fight to protect American interests and national security. Opponents directly proclaim that the various NSA data-collection efforts are beyond unconscionable and should instead be viewed as nothing less than utterly un-American given its diametric opposition to hallowed Constitutional rights. This isn’t a small argument, and it goes beyond our current simplistic ideological dialogue in which there are only two perspectives: left and right. Instead, we’re seeing a number of supposedly small government members of Congress stand behind action that gives the Federal government chronic authority to end the right to privacy. At the same time, the argument that national security can at times take primacy over privacy has been upheld in the past by American courts. Before the vote, House members opposed to the amendment circulated a letter that included the following text: ?While many Members have

Met Police runs London-wide crackdown on thieves

Anna Dubuis Thursday, July 25, 2013
8:05 AM

A major crackdown on thieves who target people?s phones and other valuables is underway today across London.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

More than 7,500 officers are out in force across the capital?s 32 boroughs, kicking the day off with a series of dawn raids targeting suspected thieves and those handling stolen goods.

Officers will be using a range of tactics including carrying out street briefings, high visibility and plain clothed patrols in robbery hot spots, weapon sweeps, licensing checks and knife arch operations.

High visibility patrols will also be present in key transport hubs and shopping centres to promote crime prevention awareness among the public.

Police will be making spot checks and giving advice to pawn shops and other stores where thieves may try to sell on stolen goods.

Theft offences remain a major challenge in London, with personal theft up by 14.4 per cent in June 2012 to May 2013 compared to the year previously.

The majority (70 per cent) involves a mobile phone, with around 7,000 phones stolen per month.

New analysis shows victims of robbery are more likely to be male, whereas women are more prone to theft.

Young professionals aged between 20 and 30 out at entertainment spots are the most common profile for victims.

So far this year the Met Police has made 3,504 arrests for mobile phone-related crime and handling stolen goods.

Commander Stephen Watson commented: ?Crimes like burglary, robbery and theft have a huge impact on the people who are victims. By targeting those people responsible, plus the networks they use to sell on stolen property or trade for drugs, we aim to make our streets a hostile place for them to operate.?

Targeting better modes of relationship management with video ...

There are?a number of ways that organizations can interact with and engage their personnel. None of these methods are as flexible or versatile as enterprise video solutions, which allow businesses to customize their face-to-face communications with employees in a way that helps reduce errors and save money. By creating digital resources that staff members can access from anywhere and at any time, companies free themselves and their workforce from the constraints of traditional training, allowing for more flexible job hours and remote locations. All of these resources, both digital and psychological, are available to firms that make the best use of video communication tools.

There are some organizations that think the only way?personnel can make a positive impact on other employees, clients and the general public is if they can see and speak to each individual on a one-to-one basis. This often entails rigorous, tiresome and expensive travel for employees and a dedicated time commitment from clientele, which can cause the price of goods and services to skyrocket. Rather than wasting?assets on pitching and delivering a product, companies can save all that effort and pour the attention into creating better resources for employees and customers alike. Generating custom video content is the way to do that, and it won't hinder or harm client relations. In fact, some studies have shown that interacting using recorded transmissions is actually a less stressful and preferable method for many people.

A stronger remote connection
Fox News wrote that a recent study in the Journal of Communication?showed that people prefer to carry on their communications over long distances, helping to give one another more value in the instances where they can reach one another. The study looked at how couples communicated over years and miles of separation, taking into account the kinds of interaction these individuals were able to access. Such methods included talk, text, phone calls and video tools, as well as traditional face-to-face interactions. Looking at how each of these methods affected the overall quality of each person's relationship satisfaction could help organizations as well in understanding how people maintain their connections to the best of their enjoyment.

According to the study,?people who were required to stay apart from loved ones?longer took more fulfillment out of the time they could communicate with one another than couples that had access to one another every day. People experienced enhanced perceptions of their partners, nurturing more fondness for the other person thanks to the inability to get closer to them physically. On top of that, their interactions were recorded as more positive and less trivial than those carried out by face-to-face couples.

"Use more frequent and longer communications," advised Dr. Crystal Jiang, one of the key researchers on the couples study, "and don't forget to express your affection and commitment."

These characteristics are shared by corporate videos. Business recordings focus on the most important and essential data, sharing a visual connection with each employee in a setting that best works for them. Just like with the couples study, enterprise video solutions allow remote employees and distant clients to enjoy a more positive view of the parent organization due to the optimistic qualities of all the outgoing messages a company provides. Creating a more positive image of a corporation is therefore easier when utilizing better video communication tools.

Looking them in the eye
When people do reach out to one another, the way that they present themselves is important if organizations want to ensure that viewers get the maximum positive response. One of the most vital elements of structuring these interactions is taking time to ensure that those on camera are making proper eye contact. Some firms may still feel that video isn't as powerful tool as an in-person meeting, even when considering the couples study, because they assume that only seeing an employee can give them the best information and insight into corporate operations.

However, Business 2 Community stated that what companies may really need is better eye contact.?The source wrote that most adults only make eye contact with one another about 30 to 60 percent of the time, spending the rest of the conversation looking into the distance or staring at their hands. When people boost that percentage to 70 percent of a total interaction, employees get better responses. This applies to coaching sessions, training videos and other visual resources that give personnel access to a human being, either recorded or real.

Especially with remote connectivity, the source stated that making eye contact is the best way to bridge the gap between in-house staff and remote audiences. No matter what the nature of the recorded material, looking right into the camera will ensure a more positive response from viewers. Coupled with the innate remote qualities associated with distance relationships, companies can see better engagement by using video tools than traditional methods.
